Eric Ravilious was an outstanding artist, designer and illustrator and is now one of the most popular British artists on the 1930's. His early work depicted the countryside around him in the South East of England, as well as urban scenes of London. Many of his works are seen as capturing a sense of Englishness that existed between the wars. Ravilious was born in 1903 in Eastbourne. He was painter of watercolours murals, a book illustrator in wood engraving lithographs, and a designer od transfer-ware pottery. The life of Eric Ravilious was tragically cut short, by a flying accident near Iceland in 1942. As an official War artist, he produced famous works detailing ships, aircraft and coastal defences, many of which have been exhibited at the Imperial War Museum, London. Private collections of his work are held by the Victoria and Albert museum, London and the largest private collection, by the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne. Summer 2010 sees many exhibtion sof his works in East Sussex, including the Towner Gallery and Charleston.
